Time Management Tip #1 - The Rule of 1440

The Rule of 1440 applies as long as time travel is not possible.

There are many aspects to time management and here at Time Management HQ we address pretty much all of them including the big words and fancy concepts. But this new series of Time Management Tips is going to be different. I’m going to take you back to basics to focus on the quick and easy things you can do to rebalance your life and get back in control of how you spend your time.

By the time we get to Tip #10 you will feel a changed person.

Guaranteed.

Unless of course you are like most people and read good advice but simply ignore it. If that’s the case then you’re wasting your time.

Today’s tip, Time Management Tip #1, is truly elementary and such a “duh” concept that most people simply forget it, let alone use it to their benefit.

Today’s tip is all about The Rule of 1440.

Each and every day of your life consists of 24 hours, with every precious hour containing no more than 60 minutes. And at the end of the day 1440 minutes have past. Those minutes are gone. Whether you have spent them wisely or wasted them they are gone.

Forever.

Time travel still hasn’t been invented and is unlikely to become a reality in our life times.

So when it comes to managing your time you have to realize that time is extremely precious. We are all mere mortals with only one certainty in our life: the time we have to live our lives is limited. Any time spent can never be retrieved.

If you live to a healthy 75 years of age you will have spent some:

  • 27,394 days
  • 657,450 hours
  • 39,447,000 minutes

That may look like a heck of a lot of time, but don’t forget that you will have literally been sleeping for around 25 years or well over 13 million minutes. What about time spent on eating, commuting, office work, running errands etc.? By the time you take all that off that wonderfully large total that makes your life, you’ll be surprised how little time is left for you to use the way you really want – to have the time of your life.

And that is what The Rule of 1440 is all about – realize every day that time is precious, it’s life’s gift to you. Use it wisely and get rid of as many time wasters in your life as you can.

Next week’s, Time Management Tip #2 will give you a great start by focusing on what must be our nation’s biggest time waster!
